Cicilia is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with 15 years post admission to the roll of advocates experience. She currently works with the ABS Initiative as the Technical Advisor for GIZ on matters of Access and benefit Sharing in Kenya where she works on matters relating to the Nagoya Protocol and the Convention on Biological Diversity. She is involved in supporting the Country’s partners in implementation of the Protocol and in supporting providers such as indigenous peoples in negotiating contract documents like prior informed contracts (PIC). In her last appointment as Programme Manager at Natural Justice, she was charged with the responsibility of providing guidance on matters relating to traditional knowledge, benefits sharing, conservation and customary use all of which touch on among others governance, socio-economic dynamics of society and environment, equity in sharing of benefits. She has vast experience of matters relating to environment and environmental justice, law and regulation having worked as in-house Counsel at the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) for 8 years where she was also litigation counsel. Before this she was in active legal private practice for 5 years. She also sits on the Board of CEMIRIDE, CBD Women Caucus also known as Women4Biodiversity and is currently advisor for a network of women and University Students called IUNCBD where she is the coordinator IUNCBD Kenya Thematic Research Group on Biodiversity, Law, Indigenous Peoples and Gender and an advisor IUNCBD Women Gender Unit for Africa. She has also been part of various delegations to several regional and international meetings including the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Vienna Convention on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) and the Post 2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. She is currently awaiting graduation in December 2020 after submission of thesis for her Master of Arts Degree in Environmental Policy at the Centre for Advanced Studies in Environmental Law and Policy (University of Nairobi). She was also a recipient of the Alexander von Humboldt Climate Protection Fellowship (2016/17), a research fellowship she undertook at her host Institution in Germany, the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) and where the area of cous was climate change and its interdisciplinary nature.
